The modern town of Pomorie is located on a narrow rocky peninsula named Pomorie, 3,5 km into the Black Sea on the northwestern coast of Bourgas Bay. Pomorie is the third largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with its 14,062 people, after Varna and Burgas. From the south, east and northeast the town is surrounded by sea and from the north - by the lake, with only the west-northwest, by a narrow isthmus, too often inundated by the sea, is associated with Black box, which is part of Bourgas Valley. Over the millennia, the configuration of the terrain is changing, which is why the village has changed its location. Now 10 km south is the city of Burgas, 18 km north - Nessebar. Between these two cities passes the modern history of Pomorie.
The ancient settlement of Anchialo /now Pomorie/ was established as a Greek colony at the end of the fifth century BC. A large part of its inhabitants were Thracians. Today it stands before us as a modern town, keeping in itself now that same history and glory it had many centuries ago.
The town of “white gold”, obtained using the same age-old technology, the town known for its wine and music, the town that has outlived the centuries…
The beach line is 7 km long and it includes 3 differentiated beaches. The average annual sunshine here is the longest and can reach up to 2360 hours a year. As the town is situated on a peninsula, 2 km cut into the sea, Pomorie has cool summers and mild winters. Before the sun rises, the air is saturated with ozone and negative ions, ultraviolet rays and iodine vapours, which has a healing effect on upper respiratory tract infections. The sand is rich in iron oxides and salts and, since it is heated up to 60° C, it is suitable for sunbathing. Water warms up to 20 – 28° C and is perfect for healing procedures for both children and adults.
In 1998 the town was awarded the Blue Flag award. It is a European ecology award granted for clean and safe beaches and yacht ports. This is just a fragment of the charming little town.

History
Antiquity
The city was founded under the name Anhialo in the V century BC Much of its inhabitants were Thracians. From its inception until the beginning of the last century, it is the most important coastal city in the Bulgarian lands.
Especially zenith reached during the Roman rule. In ancient Anhialo (Pomorie) Christianity penetrates at the end of I century. According to legend St. Apostle Andrew on the way to Kiev runs through the Black Sea city, then a large administrative and port center within the Roman Empire. At the time of the Emperor Diocletian (284-305) from Phrygia the Balkans comes Sebastian world that preaches in Anchialus and surrounding towns. At that time Anchialo already religious center and despite persecution from the III-IV century reports of bishops of the city.
Then the town became bishop center and minted its own coins. Since that time (III-IV c. AD. Chr.) Is Thracian tomb - heroon found in the outskirts of Pomorie today.
Middle Ages
In V-VI century the Anhialo church was proclaimed archbishop. Christianity is the official religion of the Eastern Roman Empire - Byzantium. The legend tells that in the VII century, in this place there was a temple or monastery dedicated to St. George the Martyr.
Krum in 812 Anchialo was captured by Bulgarians, and later, after the process of Christianization of Bulgaria, to 894 here was established Bulgarian church organization. A little later (on 20 August 917) Simeon Veliki applied historic defeat of the Byzantine army at the Battle of the River Achelous. Since the end of the XIII century Anhialska Bishop was honored with the rank Bishop. Subsequently Anhialo often crossed by Bulgarians and Byzantines and vice versa. Many important battles between Bulgarians and Byzantines were fought in its outskirts throughout our medieval history.
Little is known (antiant) Bulgarian name of Pomorie – Tuthon.
Pomorie (Anhialo) was set on fire and destroyed by the Goths, Avars, fires and natural disasters - so there are less preserved old buildings, despite centuries of history.
Ottoman period and the Renaissance
In the first invasion of the Ottoman Turks in Thrace Anchialo probably was demolished and abandoned ("History of Pomorie"). Temporarily handed over to the Byzantines, the city is again Christian until March 1453 when it was conquered by the Turks finally. Ottoman version of the name of the city is "Ahiolu".
Born in Constantinople Anchialo (universal) Patriarch in 1536 Jeremiah II gives autocephaly of the Russian Church, it gets partriach status. Jeremiah II remains Patriarch of Constantinople until his death in 1595

On 30 July 1906 the Greek part of the city is on fire and completely destroyed for the last time in response to the slaughter in Andartsko Zagoriche, as most of its inhabitants were forced to emigrate to Greece, where settlements based Nea Anchialos, Anchialos and Evksinupolis.

It is one of the largest Russian-speaking diaspora on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. All in all, there are more than 4,000 Russian citizens. In summer this amount increases up to 7,000.
It is interesting that after the pensioners who were buying their Bulgarian housing in the past, more and more young families move here now. And they are well assimilated into Bulgarian society.
Russians are strongly attracted by low language barrier, great food, wonderful climate and the friendliness of the local people. The local economy influx of Russians is also a plus, as they are opening new outlets, shops and salons.
